Towing around Ottawa
Ottawa sits on the Quebec border, and plenty of trips — to Gatineau Park, the Outaouais lakes or Mont-Tremblant — cross the river. The rules of the province you are driving in apply, so a trailer that meets Ontario's 1,360 kg brake rule can still fall short in Quebec, where brakes are also required once the loaded trailer weighs more than half your tow vehicle.
If you tow on both sides of the river, set your trailer up for the stricter of the two and you are covered either way.
Ontario towing rules to know
- A trailer whose gross weight (trailer plus load) is 1,360 kg or more must have brakes strong enough to stop and hold it.
- If you use safety chains, they must be crossed under the tongue so it cannot drop to the road if the hitch lets go.
- If your load blocks the view to the rear, you need additional mirrors that give a clear view behind.
- Trailers wider than 2.05 m need two yellow clearance lights at the front.
- No one may ride in a trailer while it is being towed — including a house or boat trailer.

Find parts that fit your vehicle
Add your vehicle with the selector at the top of any page and the whole store narrows to parts listed for it — hitches, wiring harnesses and brackets included. You can also search by part number if you already know what you are replacing. Always check a hitch's weight rating against your trailer's loaded weight and your vehicle's towing capacity, whichever is lower.
Shipping to Ottawa
We are an online store, so there is no showroom in Ottawa — every order ships to your door. Standard shipping is a flat $25 on orders under $200 and free on orders of $200 or more, the same rate everywhere in Canada. There is nothing extra to work out at checkout: the rate is the same whether you are in Ottawa or anywhere else in the country.
Orders ship from within Canada and are priced in Canadian dollars, so there is no duty, no brokerage fee and no exchange-rate surprise when the parcel arrives — the three charges that catch people out when towing parts come across the border from a US site.
Why buy direct from Canada Hitch Rack
- Free shipping once the order reaches $200. Most towing jobs need more than one part — a hitch, a wiring harness, a ball mount, a lock. Ordering them together in a single $200 order means you pay nothing for freight instead of $25 a time, so buying direct in one go is the cheaper way to do it.
- Canadian store, Canadian dollars. Orders ship domestically, so the price on the page is what you pay — no customs charges added on delivery.
- The range of a warehouse, not a shelf. More than 28,200 parts across hundreds of categories, including the sizes and ratings a general store usually has to order in.
- Parts listed by vehicle. Pick your year, make and model once and the catalogue filters to what is listed for it, which is the difference between a hitch that bolts to existing points and one that does not.
- A person to ask. Call 1 (888) 926-0442 or email info@canadahitchrack.com before you order if you are unsure — it is a lot easier than returning a hitch that was never going to fit.
