Towing around Hamilton

Hamilton is split by the Niagara Escarpment. Getting between the lower city and the Mountain means steep accesses such as the Claremont Access and the Jolley Cut, and a loaded trailer pushes hard on the way down. Trailer brakes, a brake controller set for the load, and a lower gear on the descent make those grades far easier on your tow vehicle.

• A trailer whose gross weight (trailer plus load) is 1,360 kg or more must have brakes strong enough to stop and hold it.
• If you use safety chains, they must be crossed under the tongue so it cannot drop to the road if the hitch lets go.
• If your load blocks the view to the rear, you need additional mirrors that give a clear view behind.
• Trailers wider than 2.05 m need two yellow clearance lights at the front.
• No one may ride in a trailer while it is being towed — including a house or boat trailer.
