Towing around London

London sits where Highways 401 and 402 meet, so a lot of local towing is highway towing — down to the Lake Erie launches at Port Stanley, west toward Sarnia, or north to Grand Bend for the weekend. Long, flat, fast kilometres are easy on brakes but hard on anything loose: check your coupler, ball and wiring plug before every run.

Boat trailers that get dunked at a public ramp need the most attention. Fresh water still finds bearings, light sockets and the inside of a coupler, and a seized jack or a dead trailer light usually starts there.

Ontario towing rules to know

• A trailer whose gross weight (trailer plus load) is 1,360 kg or more must have brakes strong enough to stop and hold it.
• If you use safety chains, they must be crossed under the tongue so it cannot drop to the road if the hitch lets go.
• If your load blocks the view to the rear, you need additional mirrors that give a clear view behind.
• Trailers wider than 2.05 m need two yellow clearance lights at the front.
• No one may ride in a trailer while it is being towed — including a house or boat trailer.
