Hitch Receiver Sizes: 1-1/4", 2", 2-1/2" and 3" Explained

The receiver is the square tube on the back of your hitch. Its inside opening decides which ball mounts, bike racks and cargo carriers fit. Four sizes cover almost everything you'll see in Canada.
How to measure your receiver
Measure the inside of the square opening, side to side. Don't measure the outside of the tube — the wall thickness will make a 1-1/4" receiver look closer to 2".
The four receiver sizes

Receiver adapters: useful, with limits
Receiver adapters let a smaller accessory fit a larger receiver — a 1-1/4" bike rack in a 2" hitch, for example. That direction is generally fine for accessories.
Going the other way — fitting a 2" accessory into a 1-1/4" receiver — means the accessory can carry more than the hitch was built for. Only do it if the accessory's weight stays within the smaller hitch's rating.
Extensions (which push the receiver further back) add leverage on the hitch. That reduces how much tongue weight it can safely carry. Most extension makers publish a lower rating for that reason — follow it.
Pins, clips and rattle
Receivers use a hitch pin through the side holes: typically 1/2" for 1-1/4" receivers and 5/8" for 2" and larger. A worn or undersized pin is a common source of clunking. A new hitch pin and clip or an anti-rattle device tightens things up, and a locking pin keeps accessories where you left them.
Keep the receiver clean
Road salt and moisture rust the inside of a receiver, which can make a ball mount hard to remove. A hitch cover keeps the tube clean when you're not towing.
