Towing around Vancouver

From Vancouver, the classic tow is up the Sea-to-Sky Highway toward Squamish and Whistler — long climbs and descents where trailer brakes and a brake controller matter. If your trip includes a ferry, check the operator's current vehicle size rules and reservations before you go, since a trailer changes what you book.

BC's brake rule has two tests: brakes are required unless the trailer's licensed weight is 1,400 kg or less and under half your tow vehicle's licensed weight.

British Columbia towing rules to know

• A trailer can go without brakes only if its licensed weight is 1,400 kg or less and less than 50% of the licensed weight of the tow vehicle. Miss either test and it needs brakes.
• On trailers with a licensed weight over 2,800 kg, the brakes must be applicable by the driver from the normal seated position — in practice, an in-cab brake controller.
• Use a secondary connection such as safety chains in case the hitch separates.
