Fifth Wheel vs Gooseneck Hitch: Differences and How to Choose

Both hitches mount in a pickup bed and place the trailer's weight over or just ahead of the rear axle. That's why they handle far heavier loads, and tow more steadily, than a bumper-height receiver hitch. The difference is in how the trailer connects.
How each one connects
- Fifth wheel: a large, flat hitch plate with locking jaws. The trailer's kingpin slides into the jaws — the same principle as a semi-truck.
- Gooseneck: a ball, typically 2-5/16", mounted in the truck bed. The trailer's coupler drops over it.

Short-bed trucks and sliders
On a short-bed truck, the front of a fifth-wheel trailer can hit the cab in tight turns. A sliding fifth wheel hitch moves the pivot point back for manoeuvring. Check the trailer maker's guidance for your bed length.
Factory puck systems
Many recent heavy-duty pickups come with factory mounting points in the bed, often called a puck system. Hitches made for these drop in without drilling. Check whether your truck has them before choosing a rail-mounted system. Browse fifth wheel brackets and rails.
Can one truck tow both?
Yes. Adapters let a fifth-wheel pin box couple to a gooseneck ball, and some hitches convert between the two. Adapters change the trailer's geometry and have their own ratings, so check the trailer manufacturer's position before using one.
